REVIEW

Throughout the Viceregal era, Saint Francis was the convent among convents. Its presence was a symbol for victory: with its order the triumph was sealed, and was the opposite of the Night of Sorrows. Its intrepid monks successfully blended among the indigenous to convert them, and even compiled the history of their customs. Because of this, since very early, the secular priesthood became rivals with the order to such degree that towards 1570 all the supplies used to teach the indigenous population how to rule their own populations, was cut.
