Vasconcelos Library


The Vasconcelos Library is located at the north part of Mexico City, next to the old railway station in Buenavista, and it’s an extraordinary example of contemporary architecture, built of steel, concrete, marble, granite, wood and glass. It has been mentioned in Architectural Record Magazine, as one of the most representative and modern library buildings in the world.

The precinct was inaugurated in May 2006, and provides free access to different library services and several cultural activities. It offers a bibliographic heritage formed by 580 thousand books classified according to the Dewey International System. It also has books for children, Braille, musical and multimedia material. Its general and reference collections are placed in more than 40 thousand meters of shelf hanging open to the public.

It offers loan service for the library and to take home; it has a reference area with access to the database and complete texts as well as free loan of computers and personal devices with Internet.

In the Multimedia Room the user can enjoy language courses, movies, documentaries and tutorials. The Music Room offers classical music, jazz, pop, etc. on the recorders, plus audiovisual material like concerts and operas on DVD. It also features pianos, guitars and violins that are available to anyone who wants to try one of these musical instruments in the room. The Kids Room houses 67, 800 books and 25 computers with interactive. The Braille Room for the blind and visually impaired has a collection printed in Braille, audio-books and computer text readers. The Multipurpose rooms offer literary, science and computing workshops as well as film festivals and conferences. The auditorium holds 500 persons and it’s designed and equipped for concerts, theater and dance productions.
