On November 30, 1934, when Lázaro Cárdenas was sworn in as President of the Republic, he decided not to live in the Castle of Chapultepec to open it to the public. From that decision came the Official Residence of Los Pinos, located in the ranch La Hormiga, next to the historic Molino del Rey.
The new official residence took its name in memory of the estate where former President Cárdenas met his wife Amalia Solórzano. To honor its name, the president had numerous pine trees planted. Since then, every president, except Adolfo López Mateos, has lived in the official residence of Los Pinos.
As of December 1, 2018, the official residence will be a cultural space with public access, free and universal.
