John Edward Spencer King was born in England on April 25, 1928. He studied painting and sculpture in different artistic institutes in his country, France, and Italy, and exhibited his works in important galleries of London. Together with Elizabeth Brown, his wife, he traveled to Mexico in a vacation to know the country. They arrived in Cuernavaca on February 22nd, 1965 and lodged in the hotel: La Casona (The Mansion).

On 1968, after his wife’s death, John went to England to settle some legal issues and finds the economic means that, afterwards, will help him in his purpose of giving Cuernavaca a house of culture. The foundation created by Spencer continues the restoration and creation of a center for the promotion of the arts and the culture called: La Casona Spencer Museum, in his honor; it was inaugurated on August, 2006.
