The site was a village settlement on its earlier stages that gradually gained regional importance as a center of commercial traffic control within the San Pedro Mártir River, through which the communication and exchange of goods were established between the Maya people of the Petén region in Guatemala, and those settled on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. It is characterized by a strong development of classical Mayan Art, documented in hieroglyphic inscriptions and monumental architecture.
