Located at the bottom of a narrow and serpentine valley, Guanajuato was the world's leading silver-extraction centre in the 18th century. This fact propitiated the construction of great religious, civil and industrial properties; also tunnels, preys, haciendas and mining facilities, both in the central area as in the neighboring areas, in a natural frame excellently modeled and modified by man. The churches of La Compañía and La Valenciana are considered to be among the most beautiful examples of Baroque architecture achieved in Guanajuato.
