Zapopan is the second most populated municipality in Jalisco and the seventh most populated in Mexico. During a solemn session on December 8th, 1991, in which was celebrated the 450th anniversary of the repopulation of the Zapopan Village, it received the title of city.

Its name derives from a Náhuatl pictogram represented by a Sapodilla tree with a flag at its side. The name of Zapopan comes from the Náhuatl word tzapopantl, which means “place full of sapotes”.
