The Fernando García Ponce-Macay Museum is the only museum dedicated to promote and spread modern and contemporary art in the Peninsula of Yucatán.It is a part of the installations of the old building, known as Peninsular Ateneo, whose building encompassed from 1573 to 1636. It is located in the main square of the city of Merida, it had different uses and modifications in its structure along the years, one of the most important was concluded in 1916 by the architect Manuel Amábilis, who gave the building a French neo-renaissance style. Among the uses it had since its establishment, we can highlight: house of the priests of the cathedral, College of Saint Ildefonsus, Peninsular Ateneo (center for the teaching of arts), Palace of the Archbishop, chapels of Saint Joseph and of the Holy Rosary, conciliar seminary, religious refuge, and offices of the government. It opened its doors to the public as a museum on April 29, 1994, with the technical and museographic support of the specialists of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) and the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). It is administrated by the Macay Foundation, with funds from the Government of the State, through the Institute of Culture of Yucatán. Its eight permanent exhibition rooms carry the names: History of Art, Gabriel Ramírez Aznar, Tane Silversmith, Mayan Chuy Embroidery, Fernando Castro Pacheco, Contemporary Art of the Cuenca Museum, Fernando García Ponce, and History of the Museum.
