Refuge House Citlaltépetl

The Citlaltépetl Refuge House is a civil association with venue in Mexico City and whose main objective is to shelter threatened or persecuted writers in their home countries. The house has an intensive cultural program that organizes lectures on Literary Thursdays, special events (book presentation, poetry readings, etc.) and workshops, among many more. The creation of the House is an act of concrete solidarity, a continuance of the expression of the traditional spirit of Mexico’s openness and generosity. On March 19, 1998 the agreement “Mexico, Distrito Federal: Refuge City” was signed with the city authorities and it was inaugurated in September 1999. The first public act in the Refuge House was a poetry reading by two founding members, the Mexican writer Carmen Boullosa and the Colombian poet and current president of the association, Álvaro Mutis. The board is integrated also by Bárbara Jacobs, Carlos Monsiváis, Augusto Monterroso, José Emilio Pacheco, Sergio Pitol, Ignacio Solares, Juan Villoro, and José Areán as treasurer.
