Hellenic Cultural Center

In the 1500 of Revolución Avenue, in the south of Mexico City, there is one of the most renowned cultural spaces by theater fans: the Hellenic Cultural Center. The facility, located in what used to be the house of the Mexican collector Nicolás González Jáuregui, is formed by the Hellenic Theater, designed by the architect Eduardo Luna Taill, with a capacity for 436 persons; La Gruta (The Cave) Forum, experimental space in which tenths of new national play writers, directors and actors have become known; a Spanish gothic chapel, made of materials brought expressly from the Iberian peninsula, that has in its interior paintings by Tintoretto and Murillo, as well as gobelins and stain-glasses from that time. In the decade of 1990’s, with the intention of preserving and expanding the theatrical activities of this center, the National Council for Culture and Arts signed an agreement together with the Hellenic Cultural Institute A.C., owner of the facility. March 15, 2010 marked the 20th anniversary of the Hellenic Cultural Center. Nowadays, in the Hellenic Cultural Center takes place a permanent cultural festival for it is open from Monday to Sunday 49 weeks per year. Thus, more of half a hundred plays, concerts and diverse activities are presented yearly, for which it is estimated that its activities represent the 10% of all the theatrical activity of the city.
In association with artists and cultural institutions, the Hellenic Cultural Institute has acquired a strong national and international prestige over two decades, and has become and important space where different theatrical trends from multiple latitudes meet. For all this, it has made an essential contribution to promoting the renovation, expansion and strengthening of Mexican theater.
