The Cuale Museum is located in the Market of Handicraft of Puerto Vallarta, on the island of Cuale. It was inaugurated in December of 1978.
In 2004, the building and the museography received maintenance, and the following year it reopened its doors with a collection from western Mexico, donated by the regional museums of Guadalajara, Colima and Michoacán.
In 2015, the hurricane "Patricia", which hit the western part of Mexico, flooded the small homonymous island where the museum is located, although the architectural structure of the Cuale Museum was not damaged, as a preventive measure the archaeological collection was packed and sent to the Regional Museum of Guadalajara (MRG).
On Tuesday, June 19, 2018 the museum of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), reopened its doors in order to make it again available to the local public, national and foreign tourism that visits Puerto Vallarta.
