In 1949 Salvador Novo bought a land, a former hacienda with a chapel, in El Carmen neighborhood, for him the chapel look like a theater. The architectonic project was in charge of Alejandro Prieto. After the opening of the theater, the houses were turned into restaurants and the theater was well received and had a great success. The first play presented there reached 142 shows. After years of success, Novo himself had to close it because it was not affordable. In the 80’s, Jesusa Rodríguez recovered the area, remodeled it together with the other houses that turned them into El Hábito, a cabaret, with the idea that the new space would become a point of reunion and creation like Salvador Novo thought it. The first play was El presidente hereda by Cesare Giulio Viola (Translation by Salvador Novo). In 1992, it was re-inaugurated with El cielo de abajo, a pre-Hispanic cabaret show by Jesusa Rodríguez and Liliana Felipe.
