It was expressly built for the presentation of the festivity of Guelaguetza or “Monday of the Mount”, with a Pre-Hispanic origin, now turned the most important folkloric event for the people of Oaxaca.
The first auditorium was built on 1932, precisely for the presentation, for the first time, of Guelaguetza, by reason of the celebration of the 4th Centennial of Oaxaca, because of its proclamation as a city. Then, the celebration was called “Racial Tribute”, which included the presentation of the embassies of the seven regions of the state with their music, dances, traditions, and customs. The auditorium was called then: the Roundabout of the Lily. The festivity repeated on the following years; the date for its celebration changed to the two last Mondays of July, which coincide with the festivity of the Virgin of el Carmen Alto, remembering that, for many years, after the religious acts of this celebration, the people went to the mount to walk or to celebrate. In time its potential became such that it required an auditorium according to the time.
