REVIEW

The Former Carmelite Convent is one the oldest and most valuable buildings in the city. Its style blends the simplicity of Herrerian architecture with a measured baroque that intends to show the ascetic purposes and the religious mysticism of the order of the reformers of the Carmelo. In 1997, the House of Culture was inaugurated in these facilities. Three years later, the Culture Institute of Michoacan was created and it has been the Regional Ministry of Culture since March 31st of 2004. The little cells of the friars serve as offices now, the refectory is a conference hall, spaces such as the niches, the library and the areas that belonged to workers are used as reading rooms or exhibition and theater halls, classrooms, a bookshop and a cafeteria. The convent kitchen lodges the Cultural Heritage Hall.
