Amparo Museum

On April 1979, the Mexican banker Manuel Espinosa Yglesias created the Amparo Foundation in order to develop activities in benefit of the society, the education, and the culture in Mexico. In the cultural sphere, the most important work of the foundation was the creation of the Amparo Museum, in memory of his wife Amparo Rugarcía de Espinosa. The Amparo Museum started its activities on 1991.

It is a museographic institution devoted to present and study the Mexican art in order to catalyze the dialogue between the history of the art and the present, the roots and the people of Mexico. It has a collection of over 1,700 pieces of Pre-Hispanic art, considered the most important collection harbored in a private museum in Mexico; also, it keeps over 1,300 works of art of the Viceregal period and from the 19th and 20th centuries. It welcomes over 120,000 visitors per year, and serves a population of 12,000 persons in its workshops, diploma courses, lectures, courses, and events.

The headquarters of Amparo Museum are located in the Historic Downtown of Puebla, lodged in an extraordinary Viceregal building that was, originally, the San Juan de Letrán Hospital, the first healthcare institution of the city, erected on 1538. Along the years the building complex that conformed the hospital became other institutions and habitable homes. These buildings were restored and unified in order to establish the Amparo Museum, through a project of architectonic recovery under the direction of the architect: Pedro Ramírez Vázquez.
