Italian style theater with more than 200 years old, it was founded by Juan José Zambrano. Its original name was Coliseum Theater and its construction began in 1798 and was completed two years later on February 4, 1800. It was opened with Andromache by Euripides, and on this stage was sung for the first time the anthem to Juárez with the presence of Benito Juárez. Later, it was named Main Theater and in 1908 Jesús Ávila bought it and finished its reconstruction in 1909. The work done included blacksmith’s, dressing rooms, and the four levels that has nowadays. To celebrate the first centennial of the Independence of Mexico the theater changed its name to Victoria Theater to honor the General Guadalupe Victoria, First President of Mexico. The re-opening took place on July 24, 1910 with the company “Drama and Comedy” of Virginia Fábregas. The building was used as a cinema theater since December 1926 to 1978, year when the “Mary Street Foundation” donated it to the National Fund for Social Activities in Durango (FONAPAS. Sp. Abb.), with this, the facility recovered its theater activities.
