General Ignacio de la Llave State Theater

The construction of the State Theater was the result of Mr. Antonio M. Quirasco’s concern, Governor of the state, to contribute to the intellectual, artistic and cultural life of Veracruz.  Designed by architect Pablo Boek and build between 1959 and 1962, the construction had a cost of 8’350,000 pesos including the land and urbanization according to his governance report from December 1st, 1961 to November 30th, 1962.

Founded on January 1st, 1962, it was inaugurated by the President Adolfo López Mateos on November 20th of that same year.

In the beginning, through the agreement issued by Antonio M. Quirasco on November 17th, 1962, the administration of the theater was granted to the University of Veracruz to house the Symphony Orchestra of Xalapa. However, six years later, in November 1968, the agreement was revoked by the governor of the state back then, Mr. Fernando López Arias.

On June 5th, 1971, the statue of General Ignacio de la Llave, located in Paseo de las Palmas in Veracruz is moved to the front of the State theater and that same year, during the 108th death anniversary ceremony of the General, the theater was renamed after him.
