The building that harbors it was built at the end of 1999 and opened on October 21st, 2002. Up to the moment, it is the only museum of its kind in the Mexican south east. In its rooms are exhibited over 200 fossils from Chiapas, whose antiquity oscillates between 300 million years and 10 thousand years. The main room is crowned by the reconstruction of a Megatherium, besides having fossil remains of plants, invertebrates, and representative vertebrates of nearly all the municipalities of the state. Among the most attractive exhibitions, there is the one titled: Amber from Chiapas, where pieces of the fossil resin containing insects and spiders are presented. The museum has a multipurpose room and an exhibition lab, through which the visitor can see how does a paleontologist work in the restoration and preservation of the fossils.
