“An altar is a means for remembrance, at the time that it is a vehicle for memory, personal, family, and social. It is commemoration and solace; in this way we receive our loved ones who parted before us”, pointed out Eva Ayala Canseco, director of El Carmen Museum when she opened this space starring Alfonso Caso (1896 – 1970) and Carmen Carrillo (1900 – 1981).
The former represents the Dead persons of INAH, because besides he was an archaeologist, served as the first director of the institute on 1939; Carmen Carrillo, on the other hand, symbolizes the dead persons related to El Carmen Museum, because as an admirer of the town of San Ángel, donated to this museum her exceptional collection of over 60 wax sculptures of Mexico’s indigenous dances.
In this way, the altar of the dead of the museum, which is crowned by a portrait of Carmen Carrillo and a painting of Alfonso Caso, flaunts 25 pieces in papier-mâché alluding, through cartoon skeletons, to the different workers of INAH: archaeologists, historians, physical anthropologists, and restorers, among others.
