Sculptures of the Virgin with the Child

Lecture

We will comment on the examples of religious sculpture in small format, meant for domestic altars, which were profusely made in the European region of Flanders in the 16th century. They were works of incredible sweetness that appealed to the feeling of devotion. They represented saints, male and female, and, in larger amounts, the Virgin with the Child in arms. Some wood carvings of these features crossed the Atlantic to become the imaginary of the evangelization in the American continent, as it was the case of Our Lady The Conqueror, revered even today in the Mexican city of Puebla.
