The Barber of Seville (Il barbiere di Siviglia) is an opera buffa in two acts with music by Gioachino Rossini and libretto in Italian by Cesare Sterbini, based in the comedy of the same name by Pierre-Augustin de Beaumarchais (1775).

The premiere (under the title of Almaviva, or the Useless Precaution) took place on February 20th, 1816, at Argentina Theatre of Rome.

It was one of the first Italian operas staged in the United States of America, being premiered there at Park Theatre in New York, on November 29th, 1825.

The Barber of Seville has proved to be one the great masterpieces of comedy in music. Even after two hundred years its popularity in the scene of the modern opera testifies its greatness. The plot tells the adventures of a pair of lovers, made up by the Count of Almaviva and the young orphan Rosina, Bartolo, the girl’s tutor, also courts her despite the difference of ages. IN order to avoid him, the couple uses the aid of the barber Figaro, who will deceit Bartolo with his misunderstandings.
