The province of Gansu lies at northwest China and is crossed by the Silk Road. Through this ancient road, China’s silk spread to the Western world, and the Buddhism and the arts of Buddhist sculpture and architecture were introduced in China. Throughout the centuries, the Chinese art of Buddhist sculpture emerged. The temples in the caves, such as the Mogao caves in Dunhang, the Yulin caves, the caves of the thousand Buddhas to the east, the Bingling teple, and the Maijishan caves, are spread across the ample province of Gansu. Not only they are proof of the hard work and wisdom of ancient Chinese, but also are ancient witness to the history of the economic and cultural exchange between East and West.
