Apprentice, Master, and Professor: The Training of Painters in the New Spain

We will analyze the training of painters in the New Spain, which started with the grade of apprentice, developing very easy tasks such as the cleaning of the tools and the grinding of colors for, later, access readings and theoretical texts and, finally, to have the opportunity to get examined as officials and be employed in a workshop or set up their own.

Andrea Montiel is a bachelor’s in history for the FES Acatlán. Among the themes she has worked in are the emblematic and scatology in the painting of the New Spain.

Karina Lissete Flores García is a bachelor’s in history for the ENAH. Her line of research she focuses on the painting of the New Spain of the later part of the 18th century and the San Carlos Academy.
