Guru Kripa and the House of Culture of India in Mexico are honored to present for the second time the internationally acclaimed Sujata Mohapatra, bestowed with the 2017 Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, granted by the government of India in the field of arts, which will offer a traditional program of Odissi dance.

Program:

Mangalacharan

A dance that marks the entrance to the stage to summon the blessing of Lord Jagannath and have an auspicious beginning. The dancers salute the Mother Earth, their master, and the audience. Because it is a summoning dance, it is dedicated to the divinity.

Batu

A dance of pure technique, also known as Batu Nritya or Sthayee Nritya. It is an offering of pure dance in honor of the Lord Batuka Bhairava, one of the 64 aspects of the Lord Shiva. It is impregnated with sculptural postures that evoke the traditional instruments that accompany this art, such as the sitar, the flute, drums, and the cymbals.

Abhinaya

It is the representation of a bhava, or a profound emotion expressed in a song or lyrics, which traditionally comes from Geeta Govinda, a Sanskrit love poem of the 12th century. There are also abhinayas composed by the three revered poets of Odisha: Kavisurya Baladeva Rath, Gopal Krishna Pattnaik and Banamali Das.

Pallavi

Although it is also pure dance and elaborated, the rhythm pattern is like the blooming of a flower: beauty in crescendo, it means, Raga (the rhythm) develops in a gradual manner to create a beautiful tapestry of rhythm, music, and movement.

Moksha means salvation, the definite liberation of the experience of human life and the joining of the soul with the divinity. In Odissi is the final number of the repertory to show the total delivery of the dancer to God. With the cosmic sound of the syllable Om, the dance dissolves into nothingness. The sequence of the pure dance is followed by an invocation to the goddess Shakti, praying for the universal wellbeing and of humanity.
