“The revelation of Japanese cinema is undoubtedly the most important film event since Italian neorealism”, wrote the French critic André Bazin in 1955 about the presence and success at Cannes and Venice Festivals of films by Akira Kurosawa and Teinosuke Kinugasa. At that time the West discovered a style, a creative force and a unique dramatic expression, which had not been known before, despite the great development that cinematography had in Japan since the begining. Between 1950 and 1965 Kurosawa was a guarantee of box-office success in his country, as well as a powerful influence for international cinema.

That period, as well as his later work, are the constant testimony of a filmmaker with a strong artistic commitment, an insistent perfectionism, and a relentless search for the deepest beauty and emotion.
