The OFJs Third 2018 Orchestra Season opens with a program centred upon one of the most gorgeous symphonic pieces written in the nineteenth century: The Moldau. Premiered in 1875, The Moldau is the second symphonic poem which forms part of a collection called Má Vlast (My Homeland), by the first and most noteworthy composer of what is today called the Czech Republic: Bedřich Smetana. The name of the work alludes to the most important river that crosses central Europe, and the composer brings us on his sonic journey, beginning with the mountain spring where this river is born and finally arriving, later, at the majestic moment when this river joins the River Elbe.

The OFJ will also interpret a work by Mexican composer Eduardo Gamboa. His Suite Culiacán (2004) is inspired by popular dances, specifically from the composer s impressions upon his first direct contact with urban life. Also included on the program is Plaza de los mártires by Alejandro Basulto. This was the winning composition in the 2016 National Composers Competition sponsored by the Jalisco Ministry of Culture. The OFJ is also pleased to welcome young pianist Eli Manzo, a native of Zacatecas, who will interpret the seldom-heard Second Piano Concerto by Felix Mendelssohn. These concerts will take place on the 6th and 9th of September under the baton ofLanfranco Marcelletti.
