The exhibition proposes a tour that includes the use of Mexican cochineal since Pre-Hispanic world, as well as its apparition in the pieces by great masters, such as Diego Velázquez, Cristóbal de Villalpando, Vincent Van Gogh, and Auguste Renoir.

The exhibition presents 49 pieces from 16 national collections and 21 works from 11 international collections, with five modules encompassing the use of this material in textiles and visual arts, its religious connotations, as well as the use of Mexican cochineal today and its production.

This exhibition presents, for the first time in Mexico, the works: The Bedroom, by Van Gogh, and Lamentation of Christ, by Tintoretto, iconic pieces that speak to us of the contribution of this Mexican material to international art.

Also, we can see Judith and Holofernes, by Doménico Robusti; The Martyrdom of Saint James, by Francisco de Zurbarán; The Martyrdom of Saint Guistina, by Paolo Caliari; Virgin with Child, by Sebastian López de Arteaga; and Christ Head, by Domenikos Theotokopouos, el Greco, among other works.

It is the first time that an exhibition is dedicated to the artistic use of cochineal in Mexico as well as in Europe. It was prepared during the Mexican red International Colloquium which took place in the Museum of the Palace of Fine Arts on November 2014. In it took part specialists from the scientific departments of some of the world’s most important museums (National Gallery, London; National Gallery, Washington; Metropolitan Museum of Art; International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property, France; Del Prado National Museum; Rijksmuseum).
