Canek

Podcast

Canek (1940) is a poem in prose about the uprising, in the middle of the 18th century, of the indigenous population oppressed by the violent and arbitrary white men. Jacinto Canek, the main character, becomes the leader of the uprising of the people, which aims to recover its dignity through the fight.

The boy Guy and the girl Exa, conceive the world from the naiveté, the generosity, and the understanding. They confer poetry to the text and, for Canek, they incarnate the beauty of the simple things, the purity of feelings. They both, with their defenselessness and ingenuity, tinge the story with nostalgia.
