Discover the most important and unique in its genre collection of caste paintings. Faces of our process of miscegenation.
The caste society was product of the mentality of the 18th century. The term caste means “racial mix”, which is the crossbreeding among the main groups of New Spain society: indigenous, half-blood, white and black people, as well as the successive result of multiple mixtures among them.
Today we know that the color of the skin is determined by biological genes and not by the “blood” of people, so the so-called racial nomenclatures captured in the paintings, are not scientifically true and they are only proper of the way of thinking that existed three hundred years ago.
