Mayas Today

Such a diverse region could not house an homogeneous collective. Peninsular Mayas are a group of people physically, linguistically and culturally related, so it’s unthinkable a single way to be Maya.

Throughout its history, every community has given its own inflections to its mother tongue, an today practices in its way, ancient customs and updates old knowledge, as the agricultural activity, in which the primary role of corn cultivation is to survive and it’s is reflected in its conception of time and in rituals that ensure its growth, or in the creation of ceremonies with pre-Hispanic root and strong Christian influence, such as the Cha-chaac to implore rain to gods. Other ways of life enrich this culture: of merchants, professionals, scientists or artists, those who became wage earners, or who migrated forced by their economic situation.
