Art in Viceroyal Mexico

In this section, you can explore some of the works that mark the viceroyal period in what once was the New Spain. The images have certain particularities because from the Council of Trent, the Church reaffirmed its control over the artistic production. The 17th and 18th centuries favored the representation of religious images through the allegory and symbols as an expressive means.

Due to it was privileged the educational function of the religious image, a large part of the New Spain works are anonymous. Commonly, the work did not interest as artistic object but as an object of worship and as a means to transmit a message.
