The historical antecedents of this old building go back to the early decades of the 17th century; its first owner was Mrs. Jacinta de Ortega. On August 7th, 1840, there was established the Convent and School of Teaching. From 1848 to 1850, the Chapel was built in front of the Convent, which today is the Small Convent or the Church of the Sanctuary, for the religious activity. In what remained of the 20th century, the mansion had different purposes, although it still served as a convent and school.

From 1926 to 1965, it was a Model School, thanks to the agreement of the Public Education Secretariat. On September 16th, 1967, the state government of the state decides to establish the House of Culture, by making a deal with the Federal Government so the Model school was moved to another place, leaving in its place the House of Culture.
