National Museum for the Popular Cultures

The National Museum for the Popular Cultures was founded in 1983 by Guillermo Bonfil to document, study, conserve, propagate and promote the several manifestations of popular culture, in a systematic manner.

The museum is a vivid entity that stimulates the participation of the creators of cultural expressions, coming from all the country.

It organizes temporary exhibitions that show the diverse cultural manifestations existing in Mexico with the purpose of displaying, preserving and propagating them. At the mean time, it searches, conserves and spreads traditions and new manifestations of the popular culture by planning a series of events accordingly to the calendar for traditional festivities. It also offers pedagogic activities and events according with the themes of the exhibitions, as well as workshops, courses and seminars at a technical level in the field of popular cultures.

The museum has supported the program for temporary exhibits since 1992, as well as the organizing of a network (The Popular Culture Museums Network), that supports the creation of new places and their link to the already existing institutions and organizations at a regional and statewide level.

The current exhibition catalogue covers the proposals of diverse dimensions and themes with the final destination to the community museums, regional and statewide, cultural establishment and other places designated to promote and propagate the popular and indigenous culture.

The open sections of the museum are the Quinta Margarita, Patio Jacarandas, Salas Guillermo Bonfil, Sala Cristina Payán, Sala Galerías y Sala María Sabina.
