Of a hybrid profile with studies in physics and artistic inquisitiveness, Theo Jansen (Scheveningen, The Netherlands, 1948) was fascinated by the theory of evolution and natural selection of species, and in 1990 decides to focus his work on the creation of artificial beings. In more than two decades, Jansen has managed to create a whole family of amazing creatures that with their own names of Latin origin have reached an individual personality based on their qualities and virtues.

Starting from the study of biological evolution, Jansen develops successive generations of creatures increasingly complex, made with simple materials of the industrial age. Fusing art and engineering, its kinetic sculptures come to life through complex structures composed of tubes and plastic bottles.
