Cacaxtla was one of the most important cities during the Late Classic Period; after the fall of Teotihuacan and Cholula it achieved the political, military and economical hegemony of a large part of the Puebla-Tlaxcala Valley region. The Gran Basamento (Great Base) stands out with its superimposed structures with sophisticated and unique mural paintings. On the other hand, Xochitécatl developed primarily during the Preclassic Period as a ceremonial center oriented towards fertility cults and the summoning of rains, whose symbols seem to be translated through the female image.
