Because of the style of the ceramics and the architecture, Pahñú was culturally related to traditions from the Bajío region, mainly with the region of Acámbaro and the Preclassic settlement of Chupícuaro-Mixtlan. The site is contemporary of Teotihuacán, but followed an independent development that allowed it to survive the Teotihuacan collapse and maintain its commercial network, becoming an important regional unit in the Late Classic.
