Founded in 1843 by Antonio María de Rivera with the name of National College of Xalapa, providing service to 40 students. In 1861, the governor Ignacio de la Llave, during the French Intervention, ordered the eviction of the place occupied by the College to establish a military hospital. After the war, the College returned to the same building.

Today, the Preparatory College houses the "Librado Basilio" Historical Library, which is currently made up of 17, 631 documentary resources.
