This site is the most important urban centre in the vast Mayan cultural region. It reached its maximum splendor between A.D. 1000 and 1200. It contains some of the masterpieces of the prehispanic architecture of the south of Mexico, as the Ball Court of colossal dimensions, El Castillo, the temples of Las Columnas and Los Guerreros, among others. In them are combined the Mayan constructive techniques and the ornamental sculptures of the Toltec.
