Benigno Montoya Funerary Art Museum

REVIEW

The Cemetery of Durango, also known as Panteón Municipal de Oriente was founded in 1860, shortly after President Benito Juárez enacted the Reform Laws.

In 2002, the old part of this cemetery was declared Benigno Montoya Funerary Art Museum for its beautiful funeral architectural richness like no other in the northern states of Mexico.

Among the building inside the cemetery stands out Capilla del Reposo, built in circle in 1877.

The peculiarity that distinguishes this cemetery is the fine carving of the quarry with the remarkable work by sculptor Benigno Montoya Muñoz, who was born in 1865 in Hacienda de Trancoso, Zacatecas.
