The museum has twelve exhibition rooms where it is presented the country’s historical evolution, from the Conquest to the dawn of the 20th century, among them stand out: Two Isolated Continents, The Church in Times of the Borbones, The Footprints of Hidalgo, The Young Nation (1821-1867), Towards Modernity, The Revolutions, The Constitutional Age, The Malachite Room, and the Room of Viceroys. It also has twenty-two rooms in the area known as the Citadel, where are recreated the rooms of Maximilano of Habsburg (1832-1867) and Carlota of Belgium (1840-1927), as well as that of President Porfirio Díaz (1830-1915). Also, the carts of Benito Juárez (1806-1872) and Maximiliano, and a room commemorating the assault of Castle of Chapultepec by American troops on 1847, among other historical events. It has one of the largest collections, its archive is made of over ninety thousand objects among paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, coins, historic documents, flags, weapons, clothes, and accessories, besides furniture and household items.
