I Want to Go to the Sea is, perhaps, the most ambitious retelling of his career, showing the public unknown pieces or those not exhibited so soften. Influenced by great trends of thought of the time, Icaza was a faithful reader of authors such as Albert Camus, Jean Paul Sartre, Friedrich Nietzsche, from whom, through his painting, assimilated the form to tell and represent the world, always keeping a personal perspective.

Francisco Icaza is the protagonist. Beyond the portrait, the artist aspired to incarnate everything he wanted to “tell”: a man with a bird on his head, a sun, a sea, etc. Towards the end of his life the references and codes through which he described himself get to become a log of his tireless travels and stays across the world, the real and the imaginary.

To behold his work is to walk through one of the most vital itineraries. His long stays in different countries, his meetings with the relevant cultural actors of the time, together with a dedicated personal language enable to unravel, piece by piece, the hidden but revealing personal codes of the Icaza’s fertile career as visual creator.
