From Elena’s story, a beautiful Polish princess overwhelmed by the continuous love interest she causes, Jean Renoir reflects on reality and its representations, and the drama meaning of life. As in other of his films, the filmmaker uses painting not only as an artistic reference, but also as a narrative device. The result is a film where, supported by Ingrid Bergman’s work in the main role, Renoir vindicates a poetic of the implausible.
