Poetry Aloud Festival

2019 Edition

500 years after the arrival of the expedition of Cortes to Mexico and his meeting with Moctezuma, Poetry Aloud Festival commemorates this foundational event of our culture. First, with a commission to the composer Rogelio Sosa inspired by the tireless work of the anthropologist, historian and thinker Miguel León-Portilla, whose recording of the Mexica myth of the five suns is the germ of a sound intervention that includes narrations in Spanish and Náhuatl, voices and live instruments and electronic.

Second of all, already inserted in the field of rap (which again occupies a fundamental place in the Poetry Aloud Festival program), through an epic battle between the Spanish conqueror and the Aztec emperor, staged by Vincent Velázquez as Hernán Cortés, Bankai con Suerte as Moctezuma and Victoria Cuacuas as La Malinche.

On Saturday 24th, day of the rap in the Poetry Aloud Festival, begins with an open freestyle contest and ends with the presentation in Mixteco, Spanish and English of the Oaxacan Una Isu and then of the Venezuelan Akapellah, a shining star of the vocal improvisation.

The reading of Battles in the Desert by José Emilio Pacheco, by students of the Theater University Center, is a nod to the origins of Poetry Aloud Festival in the Lake House.

The avant-garde and multidisciplinary spirit of the founders is also evident in a modern Exquisite Corpse that combines poetry, illustration and music with the participation of Carla Faesler, Horacio Warpola and Bef, among others.

A great poet of our times, the rocker Lou Reed, appears in the opening of Poetry Aloud Festival in his lesser-known facet thanks to the concert of Zeitkratzer an ensemble of Berlin, which offers its version for the ensemble of Metal Machine Music, the precursor disc of noise that Reed recorded to everyone’s surprise in 1975.
