Mater Dolorosa: Iconography and Festivity

The devotion to the sorrows of the Virgin Mary was born in the Middle Ages, and took on, at least, three variants: the Virgin Dolorosa beholds the child, usually asleep and suffers for his Passion ahead of time; Pieta, where Mary holds her son recently taken down from the cross; and the Virgin of Sorrows, who is depicted with swords piercing her chest or heart, as a representation of her suffering.

The temporary exhibition consists in a visual tour across paintings, etchings, sculptures, and religious objects with motifs of the Virgin of Sorrows and the Virgin of Solitude.
