The village of San Miguel el Grande was first established in the 16th century, as a fortified town, to protect the en trance to the north of the Royal Inland Road.
It reached its apogee in the 18th century, thanks to the construction of countless civil and religious properties of a singular cultured Baroque style. The Oratorian Sanctuary of Atotonilco, situated 14 km from the town, is an invaluable example of the art and the doctrinal architecture of the same 18th century.
