Founding Fathers Plaza, Durango

REVIEW

In this plaza were built four buttresses near the temple, three artistic fountains, an obelisk, walkers of quarry, green areas, benches, a monumental panel alluding to the state founders, lighting, and secondary access to the atrium of the temple, but the things that caught more the attention are the underground showcases at one side of the temple showing part of the history of Durango. This small "mini-museum" displays four important aspects of the history of Durango, the first one, the Foundation of the Villa of Durango. The second one covers the subject on education where it refers to the members of the Society of Jesus who founded the school on that site in 1596. The third one is about the Epidemic, a passage between 1783 and 1786. The remains of some protagonists of this time in history were found during the construction of this plaza, so the display shows precisely these found remains. Finally the fourth showcase shows the history of commerce in Durango, which refers to the building that existed many years ago called “El Palomar", which was a warehouses building where objects owned by Julio Hildebrand were sold and it survived until the revolutionary times.
