This site was named after the insurgent Don ManuelVillalongin, an outstanding character during this national historical period. An anecdote he is remembered for is that he rescued his wife, made prisoner by the royal army, from a chapel that was adapted as a women’s prison. When the square was founded, during the colonial period, it was called Plaza de las Animas (Square of the Souls). The massive fountain placed in the center surrounded by jardinières is one of the favorite spots for fifteen-year-olders, newly-weds, and groups of graduate students that want to have a picture taken. The beauty of its design, which combines the colonial and contemporary styles, makes it stand out as one of the most harmonious and favorite squares for night walks enthusiasts. This square is a meeting point for groups of marchers on their way to public demonstrationsto go to Madero Poniente Avenue.
