Settlement founded by José de Escandón on May 19th, 1749, with the name of Saint Barbara, in the place called Tanguachín, a place where 460 families from Valles established themselves, to which several indigenous villages joined. Juan Francisco Barberena was its first Captain with political and military jurisdiction over the village. When he joined Escandón’s expedition to colonize New Santander (Tamaulipas), Tomás de Soto was appointed as Lieutenant of the village. On the following year, the mission of Igollo was established, which congregated indigenous people of the Pames and Janambres groups, and which was administered by the priest Francisco Escandón y Helguera, brother of the Count of Sierra Gorda.
