El Rey is the most important pre-Hispanic settlement in the island area of Cancún. The explored section that includes forty seven structures, corresponds to a religious and administrative area in which for sure were held important ceremonies and where high status characters lived and who were part of the political life of this region. Some palace structures that can be visited today keep fragments of mural painting that allude to gods and iconographic elements related to the religious life of the post classic Mayas of the North part of Quintana Roo. El Rey site is a must for Cancún visitors, it’s refugee for a large number of birds and reptiles who have found protection within site boundaries.
