National Museum of San Carlos

REVIEW

The building of neoclassic style, which lodges this museum, belongs to the latter part of the XVIII century. Its construction, attributed to the Valencian architect Manuel Tolsá, was the old palace of the Count of Buenavista, which was later inhabited by the general Antonio López de Santa Anna and Iturbe’s Family. During the XX century it had several uses, among them, it was a cigarette factory, offices for the National Lottery, and campus No 4 of the National Preparatory of the UNAM, until it was granted to the INBA and inaugurated as the San Carlos Museum in 1968 and as the National Museum by a presidential decree in 1994. Its collection comes from the Old Academy of San Carlos art galleries, the same that was founded by Carlos III in the New Spain, and it is integrated by works of European artists that were donated by the Academy of San Fernando in Madrid and the Mexican Academy of Painting, as well as by private collectors. Works by Rubens, Carrucci, Tintoretto, Zurbarán, Goya, Ingres, Clavé and Sorolla, among other great masters of European painting can be appreciated in this museum. It has 10 exhibition halls (six permanent and four temporary) a library and a cafeteria. The museum offers workshops, courses, guided visits and cultural activities.
